4-Way 2-Position Directional Valve (TL)
Page in progress. |
A four-line two-position distributor in a thermal liquid network.
Description
Unit 4-Way 2-Position Directional Valve (TL) is a four-line spool valve, usually located between the hydraulic cylinder, pump and tank in a thermal liquid network. The operation of the distributor is controlled by a single spool valve, which moves according to the signal on the S port. The distributor has two positions, hereinafter referred to as positive and negative. It is possible to set the basic configuration of the distributor by specifying the channels that open when the spool moves in positive and negative directions in the parameters Positive spool position open connections и Negative spool position open connections respectively.
It is possible to specify the flow characteristic of the distributor channels in the parameters Orifice parameterization in the form of a linear dependence or tabular function provided by the user, which can be applied to one or all channels of the distributor.
An example of distributor configuration is shown in the figure.
In the configuration below, the spreader is connected to a tank, a hydraulic drive and a pump, and parameters Negative spool position open connections is set to P-A and B-T
. When the signal at port S moves the spool to a negative position (left of neutral position), the channels between ports P and A and between ports B and T are open. The channels between ports P and B and ports A and T are closed.
In the configuration below, the parameters are set to Positive spool position open connections is set to P-B and A-T
. When the signal at port S moves the spool to a positive position (to the right of the neutral position), the channels between ports P and B and between ports A and T are open and the channels between ports P and A and between ports B and T are closed.
Spool valve movement and distributor configuration
The spool stroke is the amount of spool movement between fully open and fully closed channel. You can use the parameters Orifice parameterization и *Area characteristics*can be used to set the channel characteristics as shown in the table.

Where is the spool position at maximum orifice area (value of the Spool position at maximum orifice area parameters) set for each channel. The flow area is equal to the leakage area when the value of is negative, and is equal to the maximum when the channel is fully open. When the channel is fully open, the relative position equates to the spool stroke, so if exceeds the spool stroke, it does not further increase the channel cross-sectional area.
The table below shows the possible unit configurations 4-Way 2-Position Directional Valve (TL).

Parametrization of the distributor channels
Parameters Orifice parameterization parameter sets the method of calculating the cross-sectional area. Calculation is performed either by channel parameters or by tabular data sets, which are set in parameters of Model Parameterization section. The block uses the same data for all channels if the parameters are set to Area characteristics is set to `Identical for all flow paths`and if the parameter is set to `Different for each flow path`If the parameter is set to , then individual values are set for each channel.
Parameterization of the distributor channels Orifice parameterization can be linear or tabular.
Linear parameterization
If for the parameterization Orifice parameterization value Linear - Area vs. spool travel
is selected, the flow area of the channel depends linearly on the spool travel and the value supplied to the port S:
,
where
-
- is the maximum area of the channel cross-section (the value of parameters Maximum orifice area);
-
- leakage area (parameter value Leakage area);
-
- spool stroke between closed and open states of the channel (parameter value Spool travel between closed and open orifice);
-
- spool relative position, from 0 to .
equates to , when the value is negative, and equates to , when the channel is fully open. When the channel is fully open, the relative position is equal to the spool stroke, so the value , which exceeds the spool stroke, does not increase the cross-sectional area.
Note the linear increase from to in the figure:
When the channel is nearly open or nearly closed in the linear parameterization, one can maintain the numerical stability of the simulation by adjusting the smoothing coefficient, the value of the parameter Smoothing factor. If the value of the parameters Smoothing factor is not equal to zero, a smooth variation of the cross-sectional area between and is ensured.
Table parameterization
If the parameterization Orifice parameterization value Tabulated data - Area vs. spool travel
is selected, the vectors of the relationship between the bore area and the relative position of the spool must be defined. Interpolation is used to determine the bore area between the defined data points. and are the first and last elements of the Opening area vector respectively.
If Tabulated data Orifice parameterization If `Tabulated data - Volumetric flow rate vs. spool travel and pressure drop
is selected for parameterization, the vectors for the relative spool position and pressure drop must be set. The volumetric flow rate is calculated from the relationship between pressure drop and relative spool position. Interpolation is used to determine the flow rate between given data points. The mass flow rate is the product of the volumetric flow rate and density.
If Tabulated data - Mass flow rate vs. Orifice parameterization If `Tabulated data - Mass flow rate vs. opening and pressure drop
is selected for parameterization, the vectors for the relative position of the spool valve and the pressure drop and the corresponding mass flow table must be defined. Interpolation is used to determine the flow rate between given data points.
