Description
System object EngeePhased.SteeringVector calculates the control vectors of the antenna array for the specified directions and frequencies.
To calculate the antenna array control vector for the specified directions and frequencies, follow these steps:
-
Create an object EngeePhased.SteeringVector and set its properties.
-
Call the object with arguments as if it were a function.
To learn more about how to work with system objects, see Engee System Objects.
Syntax
Creation
-
steervec = EngeePhased.SteeringVector()— creates antenna array control vectors with default property values. -
steervec = EngeePhased.SteeringVector(Name=Value)— creates control vectors for antenna arrays with specified properties in the form of a pairName=Value, whereName— the name of the property, andValue— the appropriate value. You can specify multiple pairs «name-value» the order of the pairs does not matter. Unspecified properties retain their default values.
Using
-
SV = steervec(FREQ,ANG)— returns the control vector SV, directed to the sides ANG, for the operating frequencies FREQ. The value of the SV argument depends on the IncludeElementResponse, as shown below:-
If for a property IncludeElementResponse value set
trueThe SV components include a directional pattern of individual elements. -
If for a property IncludeElementResponse value set
false, then the calculations assume that the elements are isotropic, and SV does not include a radiation pattern of individual elements. If the antenna array contains antenna sublattices, SV is a grid multiplier for the sublattices. The phase center of each antenna sublattice is located in its geometric center. If the value of the property is SensorArray does not contain antenna sublattices, SV is a grid multiplier for elements.
-
-
SV = steervec(FREQ,ANG,STEERANG)— uses the STEERANG argument as the angle of rotation of the sublattice. To use this syntax, set the SensorArray type of antenna array containing antenna sublattices, and for the property IncludeElementResponse — valuetrue. Antenna arrays containing antenna sublattices are system objects EngeePhased.PartitionedArray and EngeePhased.ReplicatedSubarray. In this case, set the subarraystering property of these antenna arrays to"Phase"or"Time". -
SV = steervec(FREQ,ANG,STEERANG,WS)— uses the WS argument as the weights applied to each element inside each sublattice. To use this syntax, set the SensorArray the value of the antenna array supporting the antenna sublattices, and set the SubarraySteering property to"Custom".
Arguments
Input arguments
ANG — directions of the control vector
+
a real vector of length M | the real matrix is 2 by M
Details
The directions of the control vector in degrees, given as a real vector of length or a real matrix on , where — this is the number of management directions.
-
If ANG is a matrix on , each column of the matrix defines a direction in space in the form
[azimuth; elevation]. The azimuthal angle should lie between−180° and180° inclusive. The angle of the seat should be in the range of−90° up to90° inclusive. -
If ANG is a vector of length its values correspond to the azimuth angles of the control vector, and the seat angles are set to zero.

FREQ — operating frequencies
+
positive vector 1 on L
Details
Operating frequencies in Hz, specified as a real vector-a string of length containing positive numbers.

|
STEERANG — angle of rotation of the antenna sublattice
+
scalar | the real vector is 2 by 1
Details
The angle of rotation of the antenna sublattice in degrees, set as a scalar or a real vector on .
-
If STEERANG is a vector on , it sets the direction of control of the antenna sublattices in the form
[azimuth; elevation]. The azimuth angle should be in the range of−180° up to180° inclusive. The angle of the seat should be from−90° up to90° inclusive. -
If STEERANG is a scalar, its value corresponds to the azimuthal angle of the antenna sublattices, while the angle of the location is zero.

WS — weight coefficients of antenna sublattices
+
the complex matrix NSE on N | a tuple of N elements
Details
The weighting coefficients of antenna sublattices, defined as a complex matrix on or a tuple of elements where — the number of sublattices. These weights are applied to the individual elements within the sublattice.
| Sublattice | Sublattice weights |
|---|---|
All sublattices have the same dimensions. Then the weights of the sublattices form a matrix on , where is the number of elements in each sublattice, and — the number of sublattices. Each WS column defines the weights for the corresponding sublattice. |
|
The sublattices may not have the same size. In this case, you can set the weights of the sublattices as:
|
Dependencies
To use this argument, set the property to SensorArray the value of the antenna array containing the sublattices, and set the SubarraySteering property of the array to "Custom".

Output arguments
SV — control vector
+
a complex array of N by M by L | the tuple
Details
The control vector returned as a complex array on on or a tuple containing arrays.
The shape of the control vector depends on what value is set for the EnablePolarization:
-
If for a property EnablePolarization the value is set
false, the control vector SV is an array on on . The length of the first measurement — this is the number of elements of the phased array antenna. If SensorArray contains antenna sublattices, — this is the number of antenna sublattices. The length of the second dimension corresponds to the number of control directions specified in the ANG argument. The length of the third dimension corresponds to the number of frequencies specified in the FREQ argument. -
If for a property EnablePolarization the value is set
true, SV is a tuple containing two elementsSV.HandSV.V. These two elements represent the horizontal (H) and vertical (V) components of the polarization of the control vector. Each element is an array of size on on . Polarization modeling also requires that the antenna sublattices specified in the SensorArray, could model the polarization and that for the property IncludeElementResponse the value has been settrue.

Features
# SensorArray — antenna array object
+
ULA (by default) | antenna array system object
Details
An object of an antenna array, an antenna made of sublattices, or an element of an antenna array. The antenna array may contain sublattices.
For example:
using EngeePhased
ura = EngeePhased.URA()
steervect = EngeePhased.SteeringVector(SensorArray=ura)
SteeringVector:
SensorArray=URA:
Element=IsotropicAntennaElement:
FrequencyRange=[0.0 1.0e20]
BackBaffled=false
UseThreads=true
Size=[2 2]
ElementSpacing=[0.5 0.5]
Lattice=Rectangular
ArrayNormal=x
Taper=1
UseThreads=true
PropagationSpeed=299792458
IncludeElementResponse=false
NumPhaseShifterBits=0
EnablePolarization=false
UseThreads=true
# PropagationSpeed — signal propagation speed
+
299792458 (by default) | positive scalar
Details
The propagation velocity of the signal, set as a positive scalar. The default value is the speed of light. 299792458.
The units of measurement are m/s.
# IncludeElementResponse — inclusion of directional diagrams of individual elements in the control vector
+
false (by default) | true
Details
The option to include directional patterns of individual elements in the control vector, set as false or true.
-
If the IncludeElementResponse property is set to
trueThe control vector includes directional patterns of individual antenna array elements. -
If the IncludeElementResponse property is set to
falseThe control vector is calculated under the assumption that the elements are isotropic, regardless of how the elements are specified. Set this property totruewhen using polarized signals.
If the antenna array specified in the property SensorArray, contains antenna sublattices, the direction vector is applied to the antenna sublattices. If SensorArray does not contain antenna sublattices, the direction vector is applied to the elements of the antenna array.
NumPhaseShifterBits — The bit depth of the phase shifter
+
0 (by default) | an integer from 0 to 64
Details
The number of phase shift quantization bits, set as an integer from 0 before 64 inclusive. The number of bits is used to quantize the phase shift component of the beamformer or control vector weights. A value of zero means that quantization is not performed.
# EnablePolarization — enabling polarization
+
false (by default) | true
Details
The option to enable polarized fields, set as false or true.
-
If you set the EnablePolarization property to
true, the polarization is turned on. -
If you set the EnablePolarization property to
false, the polarization is not enabled.
Enabling polarization requires that the antenna array specified in the property SensorArray, supported polarization.
If you set this property to false For an antenna array that actually supports polarization, all information about polarization will be ignored. To calculate the direction vector on each element, a combined directional pattern for vertical and horizontal polarization is used.
